Ace South African batsman de Villiers had earlier been ruled out of that tour along with the ongoing ODI series against Australia because of an elbow injury that he had sustained after IPL 2016. Doctors had warned him not to rush into playing international cricket till before he recovers fully again but that hasn't stopped de Villiers from saying he will fight to become fit quickly enough to be in line for that series.

Australia host South Africa in a three-match Test series starting in November this year which includes one day-night Test match in Adelaide. That game is going to be South Africa's first ever day-night Test match to be played with pink ball and de Villiers does not want to miss it.

Speaking to FiveAA, de Villiers said of his chances of playing in Australia:

"I'm holding onto that (hope) a little bit. According to the surgeons and the doctors there's no chance. They did give me six weeks before rehab starts. I always feel the rehab phase can be sped up a bit."

If one were to go by his doctors' advice, De Villiers could be in line to make a comeback for the third and the final Test in Adelaide, and he wants to ensure he is able to do at least that.

He added:

"So maybe after the six weeks, if I do fly over straight away, I'll be there for the second Test match. There may be an opportunity to prepare during that game - not play in it - and then be ready for the Adelaide Test, which would be a dream come true to play in a day-night Test against Australia."

De Villiers' absence from the first two Tests could have a telling effect on South Africa's chances given his experience but if the Proteas can hold on to in the first two games and then welcome back their talisman cricketer, they might have that chance of turning things around.

Australia still start favourites though, having rarely lost at home and are 4/6 to win the series with bet365. Australia are 4/1 to win 2-1 while South Africa are 7/1 to win it by the same scoreline.
